The issue came down to the implementation, the integration of these ideas into one’s lives. Part of the problem of traditional wellness training is that they tend to take a one-size-fits-all approach, and I think we can agree that most things aren’t one-size-fits-all. Wellness and self-care are a dance, a flow if you will – each person lives a drastically different life than the next, with varying sets of circumstances and other roles and diverse responses.

      The sad truth about this noble role is that it causes much faster burnout than traditional roles. Paid or not, it requires you to show up in your fullest light every day for others to give them what they cannot provide themselves. Giving yourself to such a cause leaves little time and energy to tend to yourself and your own needs. It takes its toll on your mind, body, and soul in a way only caregiving can. However hard it is, it takes a unique person to take care of others, and the importance of this role in your life is meaningful, needed, and wanted.

      This cycle can leave you feeling confused, overwhelmed, and depleted.

      You might be asking yourself, “How do I find a balance? What is the key to finding the time and energy to fill my cup so that the care I give is from abundance, not depletion?”

      While I know I haven’t nearly experienced everything there is to experience; I do have experience when it comes to caregiving. I have cared for humans and animals to the point of burnout, leaving me so mentally, physically, and emotionally depleted. This inevitably led me to explore the practices of self-care, especially for my emotional and mental health. Through that journey, I gathered first-hand knowledge of how to care for someone while caring for yourself.

      I used to think we could avoid burnout if we took better care of ourselves, but these days I believe burnout is part of our culture. Whether or not it “should” be is a little irrelevant due to our overwhelming demands as humans, both personally and professionally.

      It is essential to acknowledge burnout, become more aware of your signs before you plummet entirely, and have tools and resources to help catch yourself before falling to the ground in exhaustion. Using self-care as a safety net and refueling station, so to speak. The better we learn to take care of our physical, emotional, and spiritual bodies, the more nourished we can feel from the inside. The brighter our inner lights shine, the more we become beacons for those around us.

      Can burnout be a precursor to reliance on opioids and other illicit drugs?

      You bet. More stress accompanies more responsibilities and roles. The demand to overshadow physical and emotional ailments to meet those demands becomes more important than caring for the body over time. After all, with so many plates to spin, who has time to be sick? Who has time to be in pain? You have things to do, goals to meet, people to see, money to make! It’s easy to look at the opioid epidemic and chalk these people up to just wanting to get high, but what if a percentage of these people are only trying to manage the demands of their life the best way they can? Prescription and illicit drugs are an easy outlet to do so. Too easy. As the body’s tolerance increases, more of the drug (whether prescription or otherwise) is needed and has severe consequences in every area of one’s life.

      According to the CDC, from 1999 to 2017, more than 702,000 people have died from a drug overdose. In 2017, more than 70,000 people died from drug overdoses, making it a leading cause of injury-related death in the United States. Sixty-eight percent of those deaths involved a prescription or illicit opioid. On average, 130 Americans die every day from an opioid overdose.
