What to know about Lemon Essential Oil - Misty Totzke

What do you know about lemon, really? I mean, you’re probably familiar with the fact that it tastes good, maybe you even put a lemon wedge in your water because you heard how many health benefits it has. Well, you’re in luck – you’re right! The fun thing about lemon is that it’s a super versatile oil that can be used for a multitude of different things, as well as flavoring your water!

Let’s make one important distinction – what’s the difference between using lemon essential oil and using lemon juice or a lemon wedge? First, lemon essential oil comes from the rind – you know when you peek a lemon and you see the spritz of liquid that sometimes comes out of the peel and rind? That’s the essential oil! Let me geek out on you for a minute – what’s cool about this is that it doesn’t contain the sugar and acidity a lot of people can’t handle or don’t want. The essential oil contains all the really amazing natural properties of oil (like it being great at cleansing toxins out of the body and soothing sore throats) and it’s super concentrated so you only need a drop or so, and it’s convenient – you can just throw the bottle in your purse or pocket. I mean really, have you thought about what could’ve happened to that lemon wedge in the restaurant before it got on your glass rim? Didn’t think so.

Here are some of my personal favorite ways to use lemon:

  • It helps to fight mucus, so I love using a drop or two of lemon in my water every day (use glass, ceramic or metal – citrus oils will work to break down petrochemicals (like most plastics))
  • I love putting lemon in the diffuser to help deodorize a room (I have two large dogs, things tend to get smelly)
  • When I have a sore throat, I put a drop of lemon in my hot tea (just be careful – heat intensifies the oil, so you may want to dip a toothpick in the bottle and swirl it in your tea and add more if you want it)
  • Those annoying stickers stores put on the things you buy that leave that icky residue on your item? Put some lemon on it, it comes right off. Bye bye Goo-Gone!
  • Lemon is a super amazing oil to use in natural cleaning products – in fact, did you know you could make an all-purpose cleaner with 5-10 drops Lemon oil, 1 cup water and 1 cup vinegar? Make sure you use a glass container!
